A Mesmerizing Lake Between the Mountains
Lake Kel-Suu, whose name translates from Kyrgyz as “coming water,” is located at an altitude of over 3,500 meters above sea level. It is hidden in a long, narrow rock canyon, approximately 12 kilometers long, and in places the lake is only a few dozen meters wide. This topography makes the water appear squeezed between enormous rocks, creating a truly magical appearance.

The lake was formed after a landslide. The resulting basin, bordered on one side by steep cliffs and Mount Sary-Beles on the other, began to fill with melting glaciers. The water level fluctuates greatly depending on the season; sometimes the water almost completely recedes, while at other times it fills the gorge, turning it into an incredibly beautiful mountain mirror.
Despite its growing popularity, Kel-Suu remains a wild place, where people come for the peace and beauty of untouched nature. There are no large hotels or restaurants here, but there are cozy yurt camps, hospitable hosts, and true freedom.
The road to the mountain lake is an adventure in itself. It’s a 150-160 km drive from Naryn, taking approximately 5-6 hours. Part of the road features gravel roads, mountain rivers, and passes, so an off-road vehicle is essential. The last few kilometers are often covered on foot or horseback. But the picturesque views and turquoise water are worth the effort.

Yurt camps are located near the lake, where you can spend the night, eat, and soak up the nomadic atmosphere. To get there, you need to pass through two border posts. Important: the lake is located near the Chinese border, so a permit is required.
